The Hostage Heart
by
Bob MacKenzie

for Ryan

Until its darkling wraiths came for you,
the dark just beyond our world of light
was not real for me, was dream and myth,
but then I saw the dark take your heart.

When the shadows came for you, our hearts
sent you from us on a quest for light,
taking with you some part of our hearts
we hoped would protect you from the dark.

Standing in the light as you walked out,
how could we have seen the black powers
waiting beyond the dusk to seize you,
to engulf your heart in their dark world.

The dark has shrouded you in its warmth
until the light has slipped beyond you,
and your sight shows you only the dark
your captors would have you understand.

I too have walked the edge of the dark,
have felt its cold seem to become warm,
have been drawn back from the light beyond
that dark drawing me into its heart.

At the edge of the light, I reach out,
hoping you will reach back from the dark,
hoping if we touch, my heart and yours--
our hearts--may begin the journey home.
