We Three (The Gardeners)
by
Bob MacKenzie

When we were young
There was a tree:
You and I walked in bare feet on the lawn.
You walked with me,
You talked with me,
You with your knowledge and I with my search;
Until she found the tree
And I followed her there
And we had our dessert
At the fork in the way: in-out.
Oh, see how we run.

Raise up the sky;
Send me the sun.
Towering buildings burn dusk around me.
Come from the street,
Come from the field,
Night and the lambs in blind search of the sun
Know the voice of the wind,
Know the flickering light,
But how well do they know
Of the fork in the way: down-up.
Oh, see how they run.
